For the next few days Ali packed turkey sandwiches and ate at her desk, not wanting to run into Brad in the cafeteria. She didn’t want to appear as though she were chasing him. If he wanted to see her, he knew where to find her.

But by Friday, with no leftovers for lunch, Ali had reached her boiling point. The cafeteria was as much for her use as his; she’d be damned if she’d hide her face another day.

With no clients left to attend to, she switched the phone to the answering service and headed for lunch ten minutes early. Her stride was long and determined, as if she dared him to cross her path.

She went through the line and then scanned the room for an empty seat. He was nowhere in sight. There was a table in the atrium so she strode over and claimed it.

There. That was easy, she told herself. Mentally, she felt in charge, but her stomach had other ideas. It was queasy again, so she opened a packet of soda crackers and munched on one before starting her salad. After drinking some hot tea she felt a little better and pulled out her book and read as she ate. At least in her novels there was a happy ending.

She was almost finished when she heard the scraping of the chair across from her. She looked up and there he was. This time he didn’t even bother to ask if he could join her; he simply sat down and stared at her.

“Hello,” he said, acting about as engaging as a cobra.

She packed her book in her purse and started to stand.

“Wait,” he said, reaching across the table and holding the edge of her tray. “Can we talk a few minutes?”

“About what?” She wasn’t going to make this easy for him.

“Look, Ali…you’re a very special person.” She rolled her eyes. “I guess I’m just not ready for—”

“Let me guess. ‘A relationship.’ How typical.” Between clenched teeth she leaned closer and whispered, “And I suppose you didn’t know this before Thanksgiving night.”

“It’s not like that.”

“Oh, no? Then what changed your mind that night? Come on. I’d love to hear it.” She knew she was being bitchy, but she couldn’t help it. “Hey, if you’re worried about hurting my feelings, don’t hold back.”

He ground his teeth, then said, “All right, since you asked.”

She leaned back and folded her arms. This had better be good.

“Your apartment.”

“What about my apartment?”

“You’re living above your means, and—”

“Hold it right there. Who says I am?”

“Ali, come on. Your job can’t pay well enough to—”

“No, it doesn’t. I told you I have investments.”

“Yes. And you told me you’ve been on the outs with your father for years, so who gave you the money to invest in the first place?”

“Why, you sexist pig!” Her raised voice brought curious stares from neighboring tables. She took a deep breath and let it out before she continued. “Not that it’s any of your business, but my mother was a genius at investing, far better than my father.
